Cherie Mason, author, lecturer and noted
commentator on environmental issues, has become Spokesperson
for the Marine Environmental Research Institute (MERI). Author
of the award-winning book, Wild Fox, A True Story (DownEast
Books, Camden, 1993), she will lend her voice and unique perspectives
on MERI through public service announcements and radio interviews,
as well as represent the organization at selected events.
Mason also will be one of the featured speakers in MERI’s
2002 lecture series.
“In my many years as a wildlife advocate,”
Mason says, “I have never known an organization to so
closely connect the health of marine mammals with the health
of humans. Those of us who live near the sea realize, firsthand,
the effects of marine pollution. That is why I am immensely
proud to be part of MERI’s unique programs of research
and education dedicated to the goal of saving the ocean, its
creatures and inevitably, us.”
Cherie Mason is perhaps best known to the
general public for her weekly program on the environment and
wildlife, which aired on the Maine community broadcasting
station of WERU-FM for thirteen years. She has received many
honors and awards, including an Honorary Doctor of Humane
Letters from Unity College, Maine; a Maine Conservation Award
from the Natural Resources Council of Maine; The Lupine Award,
for her book Wild Fox, bestowed by the Maine Library Association;
and The Award for Excellence in Environmental Media, from
the Maine Chapter of the Sierra Club. Mason’s most recent
book, Everybody’s Somebody’s Lunch, with accompanying
Teacher’s Guide, was published by Tilbury House, Gardiner,
Maine, in 1998.
Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Mason received
a B.S. Degree in Speech and Journalism from Northwestern University.
Before moving to Maine 20 years ago, she and her husband lived
for several years on a remote island in northeastern Minnesota
with wolves, bears and other wildlife as neighbors.
