Cherie Mason joins MERI's Board of Directors

03/27/03

The Marine Environmental Research Institute (MERI) is pleased to announce the addition of Cherie Mason to their Board of Directors. Since 2001, Cherie has been a dynamic force at MERI and has served as their official Public Spokesperson and Advisor. “As a long time environmental and wildlife advocate,” explains Mason, “I am pleased to join the board of MERI and thus confirm my commitment to MERI’s unique mission: linking the health and welfare of marine life with the health and welfare of human life.” A professional radio and TV journalist for many years, Mason has helped to promote MERI by producing public service announcements, giving radio and TV interviews, and speaking for the organization at public events. She is now anxious to start working with the Board. “I want to participate in the decision-making process because that’s the heart of the organization,” said Mason.

Dr. Susan Shaw, MERI Founder and Executive Director, stated, “Cherie is a tremendous asset to the MERI Board. Of all the things that have drawn her to MERI, her extraordinary dedication to protecting wildlife and the ocean environment will have a lasting impact on the organization and the quality of life here in Maine.”

Mason is no stranger to Board work - she was formerly a Trustee of the Maine Chapter of the Nature Conservancy, as well as a Board Member of the Humane Society of the United States. She is the author of two acclaimed children’s books. Wild Fox: A True Story (DownEast Books, Camden, Maine 1993) won the Maine Library Association’s Lupine Award. Everybody is Somebody’s Lunch (Tilbury House, Gardiner, Maine, 1998) explores predator / prey relationships for a younger audience and is accompanied by a Teacher’s Guide. Locally, she may be most often recognized for Wildlife Journal, which aired for 13 years on a local radio station, WERU-FM. She holds a B.S. in Speech and Journalism from Northwestern University and lives with her husband, Ken, in Sunset on Deer Isle, ME.
