Advisory Board Member Dr. Nancy Knowlton
Kudos to MERI Advisory Board member Dr. Nancy Knowlton on receiving the prestigious Heinz Award honoring environmental champions .Teresa Heinz and the Heinz Family Foundation announced on September 13th that distinguished biologist Dr. Knowlton is being recognized “For broadening the understanding of ocean biodiversity and the impacts of humans on marine life”.
Nancy Knowlton holds the Sant Chair in Marine Science at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History. Her research focuses on the ecology, evolution and conservation of coral reef organisms, and has taken her to the Caribbean, Brazil, the eastern Atlantic, and the Indo-west and central Pacific. She founded the Center for Marine Biodiversity and Conservation at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and co-led the Census of Coral reefs, a part of the ten-year Census of marine Life that documents the vast biodiversity sheltered by coral reefs. She joined the MERI Advisory Board in 2011.
