Internships

MERI offers year-round internship opportunities in research, monitoring, and education to qualified college-age and graduate students. Junior Internships are available for teenagers. Summer internship applications must be received by email before April 30, 2010.

Marine Education Internships

Marine education internships are offered on a competitive basis to qualified undergraduate and graduate level college students. MERI internships offer young adults an invaluable exposure to the ocean environment, intensive training and mentoring in their fields, and encouragement to reach their potential as marine educators and scientists. Research Internships

2010 Research Internship Positions
Research internships are offered on a competitive basis to undergraduate and graduate level college students working towards a career in marine toxicology, ecotoxicology, environmental health sciences, or marine mammal research. An excellent opportunity to gain practical experience in these fields, improve observational and analytical skills, and work in a Maine coastal setting. Flexible time frame. Coastal Monitoring Internships

2010 Coastal Monitoring Internship Positions 
The Marine Environmental Research Institute (MERI) is now recruiting to fill a Coastal Monitoring Internship position for the field season 2010. Interns will spend the summer studying Blue Hill Peninsula's pristine ecosystem on a biodiesel lobster boat in the ocean and in the lakes and streams on land that feed this coastal watershed. This is an excellent opportunity for an individual working toward a career in marine ecology, natural resource sciences, or conservation biology to gain practical experience in the field and in the laboratory. Outreach/Communications Internships

2010 Outreach/Communications Internship Positions 
Outreach internships are offered on a competitive basis to qualified undergraduate and graduate level college students. These internships provide training and experience in communications, outreach and development in the context of a growing research/educational nonprofit organization. Emphasis on communications vehicles -- website, newsletters, presentations, publications, press releases, photo-documentation of MERI programs. Junior Internships

2010 Junior Internship Positions 
Junior internships are offered during the summer to qualified teenagers (ages 15-18). these internships give young individuals with a strong interest in the ocean environment an opportunity to gain exposure to the field through hands-on experience. Water Quality Monitor for MERI’s Blue Hill Bay Watershed Monitoring Project
(April through October)

Phytoplankton Monitor for MERI’s phytoplankton (red tide) monitoring program (April to November)

Ocean Story Hour Assistant (every Friday morning from 10 to 11 a.m., throughout the year)

Ocean Aquarium Attendant (once a week throughout the year)

From April through October, MERI researchers monitor 40 freshwater and marine sites in the Blue Hill Bay watershed weekly.
